This building on the Great Hertstraat in Brussels was built in 1900, designed by Jules Barbier. The building in Art Nouveau style, for the Galerie d'Art Leroy Frères, is unique in Brussels because of the planned design feature of the exhibition space at the rear. In 1995 the building was protected as a monument. It has been completely restored and now is the new dependence of the auction house Lempertz in Brussels.

Lempertz deals and exhibits ancient and modern art, so to express this significance with architecture means, we decided to add a modern piece of space to the historical building.

After studying the architecture of the building, it was clear that we could only add an annex in the rear part of the building as a roof extension to be used as an apartment, which could be disconnected at any time.

The main construction of the extension is a Vierndeel steel truss, which spans 14 m wide and is fixed punctual to the neighbor walls. The design is generated from the spatial character of the steep roof of the old building to obtain a correlation between the old and new spaces.
