Just moved into a new home? Or simply looking to give your existing living room a fresh new look? Either way, you’re going to have to commit to proper planning right from the start if you want the end result to be a stylish, welcoming living room that scores 100% in terms of functionality, layout, ease of movement and, of course, visual splendour.

Luckily, homify is here (once again) with some helpful tips… But before we get to those, let’s look at one professional team that is sure to help make styling a living room (and transforming a bathroom, spicing up a kitchen, adding some pizzazz to a veranda, etc.) so much easier.

Based in London, 4D Studio Architects and Interior Designers is known as a specialist in the architectural / interior design industries. With up-class homes as the main mission, 4D Studio consists of highly qualified professionals to ensure each and every client’s brief is met with precision. What’s more, cutting-edge technology forms part of the firm’s day-to-day workings, ensuring full marks for services rendered such as residential architecture, interior design, new builds, renovations, extensions, etc.).

Let’s look at 6 factors to keep in mind (which professionals like 4D Studio undoubtedly do) to effectively style up a living room.

1. First, decide on your style

In this day and age, with the wealth of information that’s freely out there, there is really no excuse not to have a clear idea on what interior design styles you like and don’t like (homify, Pinterest, houzz, Google… ).

homify hint: Big purchases should support your specific style. If you've picked the classic style, then don't purchase a modern sofa as that will only lead to confusion.

So, once you’ve determined your favourite style, proceed with the more fun part: purchasing new furniture!

2. Arrange (and re-arrange) furniture

Don’t just push those sofas and chairs against the walls for the sake of it. The biggest problem with styling up living rooms is that most people don’t know how to arrange their furniture.

Plan ahead: what do you want the focal point of the room to be? Will this space be used for conversation or relaxing in front of the TV, or both? What layout conforms to your living room’s traffic flow?

homify hint: Always get your space’s measurements right before going shopping for furniture, whether it’s sofas, rugs, or window treatment.

3. Get your area rugs’ sizes right

Make sure you know the rules of thumb for area rugs. The most vital one is size, as a too-small one can make the living room seem disjointed.

Ideally, all of your furnishings should be placed atop your rug with about 25 – 50 cm of bare floor between the rug’s edges and the room’s walls.

4. Pick some art

There’s a difference between a bare wall and an incomplete one. You don’t need to fill up every available centimetre of wall space, but decorating with art pieces is important.

And since art is highly subjective, the best thing you can do is go with your instinct and chosen design style. See, for instance, what colours are already present in your living room and go with pieces that match those. And get informed on the basic guidelines pertaining to hanging art the right way and height.

5. Light it up

A living room doesn’t require the same amount (and layers) of lighting as a kitchen, for instance, but there are still some important considerations that should not be ignored. Most important of all, make sure to include the three main types of lighting: ambient, task, and accent.

For enhanced illumination, place your light sources at different levels throughout your living room.

6. Choose your paint colours

It’s much easier (and cheaper) changing a room’s wall colours than its furnishings, which is why buying furniture is earlier on our list. The colour will set the tone for the rest of the room. Blue and greens will have a cool and calming effect, while vibrant reds and oranges are more energizing. However, it’s always recommended to play with neutrals like whites, tans and greys, for they build up the perfect canvas for any furnishings and accessories, regardless of style or colours.
