Floor transitions are when one type or pattern of flooring must merge in with another kind of flooring. They are difficult to do super well, especially if you are dealing with two different materials, and matching the colours of an entire room's floors just so the transition goes well is not something we necessarily want to do.

You can choose the near foolproof mosaic-to-wood design for your floor transition, or the more traditional tile-to-tile transition, which is a bit trickier, but this list of 12 well-done floor transitions includes every variation. Let's begin with a mosaic to wood change!

1. Mosaic to wood

A mosaic floor in a square shape looks like a large rug. It has been painted using burnt greens and oranges, making a phenomenal transition into the dark wood floors.

2.White to pattern

This transition goes from a sheen, solid white porcelain to a marble, cerulean blue and white marble floor with an eye-catching diamond pattern scheme.

3. Marble to granite

The large, primary mosaic fresco of off-white and grey that greets folks as they enter this bakery backs up beautifully to the muddled grey marble flooring covering the rest of the store's floors.

4.Wood to wood

The dark rosewood flooring in this house melds into three other shades of soft, lighter woods on the way out to the patio, all the way down the path and into the garden. Gorgeous!

5.Tile to wood

A high-shine, top quality, hard rosewood platform has been ever so slightly elevated, creating a small ledge leading over onto charcoal tile floors with white grouting--very handsome!

6. Charcoal to hexagon

Not so much a floor here, but you can see how beautifully this hexagon mosaic transitions into the white-speckled charcoal granite.

7. Delineating space

Floor transitions executed using colour to delineate different spaces are a smart move. Here, we see how dark brown has been used around the border, while wine red and a snow white mark off the stair and the dining areas.

8. New wood

This wood on wood transition combines a bit of the new into an older antique wood floor, the latter having been embellished with old-fashioned, gothic door hinges.

9. The arrow pattern

Wood floors in general make for the best material to transition with. As seen in this picture, one room could be finished with the softer, lighter wood on the left and would transition nicely to a bolder, brighter wood flooring of the right in another space.

10. Gradient

Charcoal grey finished wood stairs bleed really nicely into the mosaic tiling which is peppered with charcoal amidst the bold pops of colour in the mosaics.

11. The kaleidoscope transition

The transitions between the various mosaic tiles on this balcony are bit like a kaleidoscope--completely transfixing, artistic, welcoming and delightfully unconventional.

12. Mosaic to wood

Finally we have another charming mosaic to wood transition. The navy and white star-flower mosaic in the kitchen and dining areas have been set exquisitely against honey-coloured wood that has a shine matching the tiles.
