When it comes to decorating, it’s all too easy to play it safe – simple colour schemes and matching furniture that all fit with the same general motif – and why wouldn’t you? As exciting as an interior design project can be, the actual work that goes into it is hard, time-consuming and expensive, so taking risks appears to defy conventional logic.

At the risk of sounding controversial, maybe we should take some more chances with our decorating schemes, and here’s why…

1. Fortune favours the bold

Perhaps the simplest reason of all, nothing truly great has ever been achieved without taking some risk. Do you want to create something really stunning? Then you’re probably going to have to take a few risks.

2. Don’t be boring!

We’ve all been guilty of a little less than inspired decorating at one point or another, and that’s ok, there’s a reason why classic styles have become classic styles, but isn’t it a little boring if we all have the same furniture bought from the same big chain in every room?

3. There’s an exception to every design rule

You know the rules: paint small spaces light colours, buy furniture in sets, don’t mix metal furnishings and so on. But with interior design – as with so many things in life – there’s an exception to almost every rule. The only rule is that the end result has to look great!

4. Really personalise YOUR home

Our homes are the centres of our own individual universes, nobody will spend more time there than you will, so personalise it in a way that makes you happy. Taking a little risk with your decorating scheme to add that individual flair also allows you to express more of who you are through your home.

5. Be an innovator

One does not become a trend setter without taking a little risk. Who knows, maybe your risky décor will become a future classic style

6. Nothing is set in stone

Yes it could be time consuming, and yes, possibly expensive, but generally speaking furniture can be moved around or replaced, walls can be repainted - mistakes can be fixed. Take a chance with your decorating scheme, and consider any slipups a work in progress and a lesson for the future. However, if you are in doubt, it always pays to consult a professional.
