This before and after is going to challenge everything you thought you knew about renovation. Cramped and cluttered, with a complete lack of aesthetic cohesion, this neglected space might have felt too far gone for some to imagine the possibilities, but the architects over at Roha Design have managed to pull this family home firmly back into the 21st century.

Both the exterior and interior get revamped in this fantastic renovation, proving that no matter what you have to work with there is a fabulous modern home just below the surface. By stripping the whole thing down to its bare bones, the designers were then free to install their own modern sensibilities, infusing the place with style and class, and greatly increasing functionality.

So join us as we explore this fantastic do-over to get you inspired to rethink your own family home!

Before: exterior

There's a lot to like about this home, even before the renovations take place. With its unique shape and balcony it's obvious why they wanted to renovate this place before it fell too far into disrepair.

With its mismatched and unsightly exterior, and its dated windows and bannisters, there was quite a challenge ahead.

Before: the living room

There's absolutely no cohesion to this room, right down to the mismatched pillows on the sofa. The design on the roof is frankly ugly and darkens the room.

The wood panelling, which under different circumstances could actually work, is cramped by all the other patterns happening, and the completely different colour of the laminate flooring. There's no flow to the room, and just looking at it you can smell the must.

Before: the bathroom

What can we say that you're not already thinking? We suspect that the pastels originally tried to pass for a theme, but after a few years' wear, they have ended up looking sickly against the tired white walls.

Not to mention those suspicious looking black patches. The tiles on the floor really overwhelm the eye, and have nothing to do with the tiles that run up the walls.

Before: the kitchen

What's the opposite of nostalgia? This kitchen really takes us back to the seventies, when our collective sense of style went haywire.

It's cluttered, it's dark despite the light pouring in from the window, and it looks like no amount of scrubbing could freshen it up. But enough dwelling on the past, let's see what they've done!

After: exterior

What a transformation! By doing away with the patchwork exterior, and plastering over the whole home the unique shape is allowed to fulfil its potential.

The windows have been modernised, the outdoor lighting looks great, especially in the garden feature on the first floor, and now the home actually has a colour scheme! It's amazing what's possible when you work to a house's natural strengths.

After: the living room

It's inspiring what opening a space up can do. Whereas the house formerly had an oppressive labyrinthine feel, now it's roomy, modern, and bright.

One thing that's obvious is that they sought to rectify the haphazard look that defined the house previously, with the light laminate flooring now stretching throughout the whole house. Doors that closed off all of the spaces have been removed allowing air and light flow, and those offensive halogen lights have been replaced with understated fixtures that look just great.

After: the bathroom

We can all be thankful that they've done away with those pastels, and simplified this whole room. The neutral blue looks clean and contemporary, and the new basins look fantastic.

The simplicity of this renovation reminds us that you don't need to overthink things, just freshen them up.

After: the kitchen

The transformation here is startling to say the least. Fresh tiles on the walls in a nice neutral grey perfectly compliment the wooden window frame. They've replaced all of the cabinets, doing away with the unsightly handles for a streamlined tidy look.

Extending the much lighter shade of laminate floor from the living area into the kitchen may just be the reason this room suddenly looks so much more spacious and light.

After: the kid's bedroom

Is there anything more fun than designing a kid's bedroom? We don't think so. You get to do away with all the maturity and restraint that modern interior decorating requires, and let your inner child run wild. We love the Hello Kitty theme, and we think that their child is going to just love the pink. But even though it's a departure from the style of the rest of the house, this room is still pulled together and unified with a single theme, the mark of true professionals.

We hope you enjoyed this stunning before and after as much as we did, why not check out another?
