Today we're going to look at an often overlooked, but extremely effective way to add some character to your home. We often ignore our walls beyond adding a few posters or picture frames, but today we're going to get a little a more inventive in our approach to design. By looking at the splendid work of several of our design professionals, we'll help you to create modern, beautiful walls that will entirely change the way you perceive a space.

It's time to think of our walls not just as the foundation of our house, but rather as blank canvases, just waiting for some style and flourish to really make the room. We're going to look at some different materials and textures that will add elegance and contemporary style to your home, without overwhelming the aesthetic, because sometimes the most understated design choices are the most effective.

So stay with us, and let's get inspired!

1. A creative divider

With a little creativity and by choosing the right materials, you can divide your home without oppressive walls. It's also a great way to save on materials! This division perfectly separates the functionality of the dining room and living room, and does it in style. The brick perfectly complements the colour palette of the furniture and the wooden floor, and gives the room a hint of industrial cool. Plus it provides a great space to hang the television.

2. The same effect with horizontal planks

Like the previous example, the wall is coated with wood slats of various dark tones, here reflected both in the floorboards, and the furniture. The interplay of volume and depth broadens our perception of space and has a refined, but still uniquely unorthodox look.

3. Feature elements

Stone and brick are great decorative features in an interior space, and promote a stylish atmosphere, but it can also overwhelm a room, which is why we say less is more. By covering only a small section of the wall with a feature material, like the stone here, you add a depth of character, and by pairing it with lighter materials and colours you can ensure that it really pops.

4. A sophisticated wooden relief

This natural woodgrain relief manages to suggest both contemporary style and a traditional warmth. The varied depth provides interest, and the deep warm colour is homely and inviting. Decorating your walls with wood provides an organic feel that will freshen up your home, and we think it looks fantastic.

5. The cool glimmer of copper

When done right, a wall feature is completely indistinguishable from a piece of art. This fabulous copper creation adds a cosmopolitan flavour to the white colour palette of the room, and ties in fantastically with the leather chair in the foreground. By adding texture and pattern they've really added some personality, and they have taken advantage of the height available to enlarge the room.

6. Varying texture and colour with brick

If you want a more eclectic look, there are thousands of different brick styles you can choose from. A great way to separate the style of individual rooms, while still maintaining an overarching theme, different colours and textures of brick are a great way to make your home stand out.

Here we see a light brick feature in the kitchen matching with the breakfast bar furniture, and a more varied and colourful feature marking the stairs. Note how the curtains in the back take the colour scheme of the bricks and develop it further, deepening the colours. The varied tones differentiate function and spatial perception, without overcomplicating the colour palette.

7. Grey stone

For a more earthy, rustic look, we recommend going for grey stone. By turning the fireplace into a feature, it has the feeling of a cave fire, and you can just feel the warmth radiating from those stones. By using a more simple concrete brick pattern for the walls they have managed to cut down on cost, but more importantly continue the theme without the room feeling too busy or cold.

8. White stone with a vertical garden

This chalk feature really stands out, not just for its texture, but for the way its natural cut complements the greens of the pot plants and the vertical garden. Another great example of the influence a little texture has on the whole vibe of a room.

9. A metallic garden

Here's a novel idea, just turn the whole wall into a garden! We love how the greens provide a living breathing element that is magnified by the unique metal tiles. With a pattern that brings to mind a cubist masterpiece, the reflective surfaces catch all of the light in the room to magnificent effect, and help the natural greens to really burst forth.

10. Polished concrete and granite

Again we see a focus on natural materials, creating the impression that this house was simply dug into the mountainside. Granite is fantastic stuff, renowned for its toughness as well as its intricate patterns, and as we've mentioned, a little goes a long way. Try using it for feature pieces, while maintaining a neutral palette for the rest of the surfaces.

11. A wall lined in river stones

This is a really unique idea, and it looks just stunning.  With an impressive water feature setting the tone of the room, the decorators have taken the theme and run with it, lining the wall in smooth river stones. A great idea for gardens, it's amazing how effective it is when brought indoors.

12. Brick and wood

Brick and wood have been the foundations of home building for so long it's easy to forget that they are falling out of favour, but don't think for a second that it's for design reasons! Bringing neutrals together is a great idea, creating a humble inviting aesthetic. The natural colour variations create contrast, and as we've seen brick comes in a variety of fabulous colours.

13. Black marble

Is there anything more sophisticated than marble? Not when paired with this gorgeous wallpaper, which draws our eye straight to the feature, while also adding a touch of lightness. Dark colours can easily overwhelm a room, but they have solved that problem with plenty of light and mirrors to increase the perceived space, creating a sense of classic luxury.

Here at homify we aim to inspire, so remember there's really no limit to what you can do with your walls. For more fantastic ways to liven up the interior of your home try these plant arrangements!
