Save money and build your home yourself!

As properties are getting smaller, we are often left scratching our heads, wondering how to build a stylish home that is compact and saves on space. And on top of it all, how to do it all while on a budget.

To help solve your building, or styling problems, or to answer any decor questions you might have, we have compiled a list of homes that are little but look luxurious. Whether it's a weatherboard-clad exterior or a white, elegant bedroom, these homes are inexpensive to recreate, and look like they cost a tidy sum of money to finish. Let's see just how they did it, and how you can too.

Start with a simple shell.

Shipping containers and prefabricated buildings are becoming more and more popular to use as a unique home. A simple structure like this one won't set you back much and looks stunning. Surround it with a lush garden and you won't need much else.

Cover it in wood.

Wooden paneling always look expensive, especially if you have the space to build a wide deck. Stain the wood to make sure it lasts throughout the seasons and add potted plants for easy elegance.

Build up, not out.

If you love a more traditional look, then why not go for a sweet cottage like this one? Building up is always a better option than spreading out over one level, and this model has a lot of room inside. Cozy and comfortable!

Get cute with the details.

Finished by home builders The Wee House Company, this is indeed a wee home. Instead of trying to impress with a huge, stately manor, reduce the size of your place and add cute details like window shutters, paved walkways and lanterns.

Make it convertible.

The key to making a small amount of space work for you is to make as much of it convertible. Design sliding walls that double as window covers, tables can be stored away when not in use, turn staircases into bookcases. Utilize every inch of space!

Install sun lights.

If you want to build a two stored home, try to get the most amount of sunlight as you can up top. Installing sun lights will not only let the light in, but will also make sure upstairs is never too stuffy.

A compact kitchen.

Lacking space in the kitchen? If you build most of your cupboards on one side, then the rest of the room can be dedicated to the dining table. Or go with a kitchen island for the ultimate layout.

Don't cut corners.

L-shaped sofas are the ultimate pieces of furniture when it comes to saving space in the living room. By having the seating filling the corners, there is no room unused – and the middle is left free for a coffee table (and statement rug) in the middle.

Keeping it light with white.

Even if you have a sloping roof, or a loft bedroom, it can still look spacious and stylish – use lighter colors on the walls and in the furnishings and you will open up the space.

Finding the right combination.

So your lobby is small, but you still want a feature? Together, one stand out piece of furniture and a vibrant, statement artwork can be all you need. Remember – less is more, especially in a smaller space.
