Today on homify, we're taking a trip to the city of wonder – none other than beautiful, captivating Berlin, Germany. We'll be taking a tour of a magnificent modern residential home built between 2009 and 2010 called House Jacobs, or Jacobshaus as it's said in German. Created by Cubus Projekt GmbH, this two-storey house was designed from the interior space outward and offers plentiful free space, storage space, and harmony with nature.

Encompassing roughly 318 square meters, the modernist architecture of House Jacobs fulfils the highest of demands in aesthetics, function, and capacity. House Jacobs house inspires onlookers with a charming, perfectly proportioned harmony between wood and glass, as the seemingly weightless red cedar facade is supported by the extensive glass windows which encompass the entire structure.

This focus on the exterior design in one of the highlighting features of this house.  The house exists as more than simply a home – it is an artistic statement. Let's take a closer look at this magnificent structure, shall we?

Intelligent design

At first glance, it's easy to see why this house is so revered amongst architects. The outward shape of the house in and of itself is something to be revered. With its enormous windows filling up entire wall area, this residential home relies on the property to determine building layout.

The floors of House Jacobs are protected with natural stone and wood and each area of the residence is provided with its own colour. Green glass mosaic revitalises the first floor bathroom, while the upstairs bathroom was designed with yellow glass mosaic, just to name a few.

The frame of the house is also quite intriguing. Looking at the S shape of the red cedar around the windows, we can see the resemblance to the S in the Cubus Projekt GmbH logo.

A cosy living room

When we look inside the house, we see a perfect fusion of modern and minimalist styles. Modern architecture breaks away from your average, ordinary, run-of-the-mill design and traditional aesthetics and strives to create spaces that go beyond standard ideas and instead pursue projects inspired by layout, location, and function. These ideas are exemplified in the living room.

The white interior provides the simplest element and the easiest palette to work with. Coordinating furniture and accessories to match this interior is a cinch when using a modern/minimalistic design. The basic beige L-Shape sofa matches perfectly with the wall colour and flooring, and the few yellow accent pillows bring a splash of colour to the space. The addition of an animal print inspired area rug brings a little extra character and another touch of nature to the room, as well.

A kitchen to inspire

The ground floor has a spacious living room, as we've seen, a bathroom, two children rooms, and a classy kitchen which all embrace modern design. Modern and minimalist design is typically free of clutter and unnecessary elements, which is why this modern kitchen is seemingly bare, but that's all a part of the premeditated aesthetics. This kitchen applies all the necessary requirements of a modern kitchen – The equipment seen here is sleek and simplistic, allowing for optimal functionality and use of space.

Prominent features of modern architecture include open interior floor plans with fewer walls. Instead of having walls functioning as supportive structures for the house, they serve more as room dividers or for appearance. Cubus Projekt played with their use of space and designed a house that extends the square meterage, which consequently blurs the distinction between the indoors and outdoors.

A simple study

Again, Cubus Projekt implements the perfect fusion of modern and minimalistic design.

Many modern homes use extensive window space to bring in light and allow nature to show through. Cubus Projekt has used this technique perfeclty. They designed this home to feature floor-to-ceiling windows and lots of sliding doors for just this purpose, and we see this on the second storey of the structure just as much as we see it on the first.

The office space provides the whole family members with a place to work, play, or relax. There's a simple desk and chair setup for your home office needs, but there's also a comfy chair strategically placed in front of the large window pane for relaxation and the enjoyment of nature. And what's more, a roof terrace is accessible from all the rooms and the hallway.

A stylish dining area

This structure really is one with nature, as practically every square meter has visual access to the property that lies beyond the borders of the house. Rather than concealing the nature of the home, this house wants the viewer to see the inner workings and the true nature of the project. Materials are shown in the natural form and are showcased, and nothing is hidden. The open floor plans in each area of the house expose the viewer to  and structural elements are exposed to the viewer. The idea of a sense of truth is present in the home, where all materials and architectural components are bare and revealed with integrity.

The free-standing fireplace separates the living space from the dining space, and the kitchen separates the dining space from the hallway. The table and chair setup accentuates modern design, but doesn't take away from the open floor plan layout.

Serene bedroom

The floating staircase of House Jacobs to the upper floor reveals an impressive view pf the outside. The master bedroom also implements an open floor design, and the bedroom and bathroom fuse together, a sliding door allows privacy when needed. The main focus is on the space itself, rather than on any decor or details not relevant to the overall design, which is why this minimalist design coincides perfectly with the overall structure of the house.

Cubus Projekt does a fantastic job with the implementation of wallpaper in this bedroom. The bamboo design accentuates the nature theme of the house and matches with the unadorned bed furnishings. We can see the use of yellow accent pillows here as well, reminding us of the living space downstairs.
