Wieck a. Darss’ Baltic sea resort is located “far from the madding crowd’s ignoble strife.” It is largely shunned by those for whom the glamour of a destination seems far more important than building a close rapport with Mother Nature. In many ways, it helps Wieck a. Darss to preserve its bucolic charm something that are vividly depicted on the canvas of famous nouveau and impressionist artist of 19th century, Arnold Lyongrün. His numerous land and seascapes give early views of Wieck a. Darss which managed to remain mostly unsullied by the smokier and dustier existences of the major cities near and far.

It is attractions such as these that attract people from around the world to set up their homes on this corner of the globe. The owners of Drempelhaus planned to build their home here and they got in touch with Möhring Architekten to help them realise their dream. Owing to their unique design philosophy, Möhring Architekten has already built a significant following. Their experiences also proved to be handy in creating the small and smart Drempelhaus.

Overview

However idyllic in looks, Wieck a. Darss could really not escape some of the perils of modern civilisation. Lack of sufficient space to set up a fully functional house was something that the designers were confronted with at the very beginning of the project. To counter this Möhring Architekten only needed to look around and see how the rustic huts and traditional country homes resolve this concern. They also had their considerable experiences to fall back on.

Structure of the House

This barn like structure occupies a total floor area of 120 sq metres. Like many other projects carried out in the region, the designers opted for a volumetric distribution of the available space. But they did not seek to create a completely free flowing space on this instance.

Ground Floor

A formal living room, dining and kitchen occupy the ground floor. Two sides of it are covered by large glass windows instead of concrete walls which provide attractive views of the outside. More importantly, they make the space look more expansive that it actually is.

Ground Floor Décor

The décor is minimalist in nature that to some tastes would seem rather Spartan. Modern furniture like sofa, dining chairs and dining table stands are coated with dark grey paint. The lighting fixtures are also kept similarly simplistic.

Storage Units

The stair occupies one side of the free flowing ground floor area. The under stair space is utilised by building elaborate storage units. Being snowy they almost disappear amid the sea created by the milky white walls and ceilings. Wood floor and dining table with a wood top try to soften the image a bit. In fact, these prove to be rather refreshing to behold.

Kitchen

Drempelhaus kitchen has all modern amenities neatly tucked behind the white façade of its cabinets. True to the name of the house, it occupies a threshold between the public zone downstairs and private quarters on the second level. The nearly nonexistent hallway is a decorated with a tree trunk. Perhaps, it too called Wieck a. Darss its home in past.

Corridor

The corridor on the first floor also has floor to ceiling built in storage units. This area receives blessings of warm sun through the skylights above. The space is also decorated with sculptural pieces and framed photographs.

Bedroom

Thanks to its generous proportions and great views through the windows, the bedroom easily proves to be the most cheerful part of the house to be in. Being relatively large in size it also feels to be a very comfortable room to inhabit. The centre stage is occupied by a full bed. Window seats double up as additional storage spaces.

Bathroom

The second floor has a bathroom with a built in sauna. The bathroom is quite liberally proportioned. Both the mirrors and skylight above help giving a clutter free feel as well.

Terrace Garden

Drempelhaus’ small garden also received a makeover in the hands of the designers. A deck with wood flooring has been created to enjoy the winter sun or an entertaining evening with the close ones.

Like Drempelhaus, you too can make various uses of your under stair space. Here are some ideas to get you started.
