You might never guess by looking at this cheerful cottage home in the Ostsee region of Germany that the design team at MöhringArchitekten was faced with significant constraints. The lot is located between a dense forest and a dirt road. These constraints actually gave inspiration to its design. As we can see its gabled roof makes it look quaint against the backdrop of the trees. The clean landscaping employed to create a sense of separation from the road has become one of the home’s most defining features. In these ways, challenge begets creativity to make the outstanding abode we see today.

The design team didn’t let the space constraints affect the feel of the interior either. By turning the second floor into a loft, the home has high ceilings with lots of windows that invite natural light to pass through. It is modern and sophisticated in design whose look features an aesthetic is as clean as the landscaping surrounding the exterior.

A home of distinction

From the moment we lay eyes on this home, it seems perfectly fitted to the space. It is enveloped between natural scenery: a forest in back and a lovely rim of landscaping separating it from the road. The house itself looks like a modernised barn with its elongated stature and gabled roof. The roof is also thatched, which makes it far more interesting. The salmon coloured sides are a daring choice considering all else that already makes the home look so unique, but they work well amidst the green surroundings.

Expansive, light, and white

The interior features high ceilings, which certainly make it feel expansive. There is a loft style second floor above the kitchen and dining areas. The white coloured walls best harness the sunlight radiating into the interior from the enormous windows that comprise much of the front walls of the house. The kitchen is clean and modern in style and the black chairs at the dining room table add some striking detail.

Powerful hues of grey

The outdoor sun pleasantly illuminates the sitting room as well. Here, the concrete surfaces surrounding the modern fireplace and the grey loveseats make a strong statement amidst the timber flooring, white walls and window treatments. The built-in shelves are ideal for storing books, mementos, and electronics in a central place.

Perfect colour palette

Moving onto the second floor, we see that the windows are finished in proportion to the height of the walls, meeting the ceiling just as it begins to slant. There is a great view of the forests behind the home and the green colours of the yard go splendidly with the timber floors and white exterior. The simple horizontal lines of the railing give a modern, almost ethereal feel.

Narrow meets expansive

The bathroom is elongated and narrow yet the large mirrors and white colour tones keep it from feeling claustrophobic. Additionally, the choice to keep use a shower with a simple glass door increases the look of spaciousness here. More built-in shelves to the side of the sink are great for stowing toiletries.

View from the backyard

The home looks markedly different from behind. It is completely grey from this angle and the prominent roof has retreated back. Here it appears much in the form of a Japanese style roof. The green grass complements the home to make it look earthy and grounded. In turn, the grey exterior brings out the small path of steppingstones in the grass. We can also get a pretty candid view of the home’s interior from this direction, which is likely why this side is oriented towards the backyard.
