In most Indian homes, the young generations live with their elderly parents or grandparents. That is makes it all the more important to have a comfortable and accessible home design for them. While coming up with the correct floor plan and interiors, one must remember that the people in question should be able to move around comfortably without endangering themselves. The house should not feel like an extended obstacle course which they have to go through every day. So, in case, you are in a similar dilemma then these five tips can make your home design perfectly suitable for an elderly.

1. Low rise fixtures and furniture

The first thing to remember is to keep all the furniture and fixtures low-rise so that it is easy for an elderly or disabled individual to use. Also, you can try adding support bars wherever possible to make moving around and standing still for a long time a little more convenient.

2. Customizing the bathroom

In areas like the bathroom, you can even consider installing a wall mounted foldable chair which can be used while taking a bath. These chairs can either be kept in the extended mode in case the bathroom is only used by an elderly or can be set up whenever required. Apart from this, you should also line the floor of your bath with anti skid tiles.

3. Keep it wheelchair accessible

A lot of old age people use wheelchairs or walkers on a daily basis. That is why the design of your home should be wheelchair accessible. The layout can include features like wide hallways or low kitchen counters. It will allow a senior person to work without asking for help every time.

4. A ramp instead of steps

Most of you might have heard your parents or grandparents complaining about climbing the staircase. So, a better alternative to this problem is incorporating a ramp alongside the steps. It not only makes it easy for an older adult to walk up and down by themselves but also comes in handy if they are in a wheelchair.
