This spacious home in the tropics was design by Cabral Arquitetura LTDA., located in Maringa, Brazil. A conglomeration of pitched roofed volumes, which are expressed both on the exterior and interior, give the home a spatial rhythm.

Double height spaces with sloping ceilings are met with single height spaces and lowered ceilings – this gives each room or function its own spatial character and atmosphere. Like most tropical architecture, the division between outside and inside is blurred through the creation of in-between spaces that mediate the threshold between exterior and interior. Now let’s take a tour through this wonderful abode!

Undulating landscape and form

Atop a hill, viewed through a swathe of palm trees, the home is unintrusive in its landscape. The form, in a sense, undulates much like the rolling hills it sits within.

The material choices are simple and favour the natural. Alongside the white cladding, an extensive use of timber is coupled with a brick out unit, giving the home an earthy and textural finish.

Between inside and out

Here we see one of the impressive in-between spaces, so to speak. The large patio area is enclosed by a huge pitched roof. The structure is left exposed and the underside is lined with a warm, rich timber. Ample bamboo furniture with comfortable cushioned seating is accompanied by an outdoor dining table, a television, and even and outdoor kitchen/barbecue area.

The space has all the finishes and utilities of an interior space while enjoying the fresh air and connection with nature; not entirely inside, nor entirely outside, it is the quintessential expression of tropical living.

Outdoor living at its finest

This image gives us an even better impression of the aforementioned qualities. The lush palm trees enclose the space, and the rough cut timber posts feel tropical and natural. It may be hard to imagine a better outdoor living space!

As one looks out, beyond the enclosed patio, an overhead pergola structure leads the eye toward the detached brick volume. For more inspiration on all things outdoor living, take a look at these balconies, patios and terraces!

An indoor spa

And what does it house, you ask? An indoor spa! The brick box is entirely separate to the main structure, yet it feels connected and at home within the greater design. The change in material differentiates it, while the proportions and placement have been carefully considered as to retain connection with the main dwelling.

Grand living volumes

Stepping inside, we take a look at social heart of the home. This open and central cavity absorbs the full volume of the structure; grand and open, it is a dramatic living space. Various spaces and functions are arranged within the greater volume and the furniture placement acts to distinguish and delimit them.

High level windows let in extra natural light, while offering wonderful views of the tree tops. For more living space ideas, take a look here!

The bedroom

The bedroom space also expresses the sloped roof and timber structure. Timber lines the floor and forms a unit comprising the bed base, bed head and bedside tables all in one! The rest of the room is left white and simple, except for a few splashes of colour found in the bed throw and cushions.
