Real estate prices are rising all over the world, and naturally, London is no exception. Industrial properties like warehouses, garages and basements too, are getting converted into residential units by discerning buyers who want to keep a control on their budget, but are looking for modern and functional establishments. So it’s no wonder that this garage and office called The Gables caught such an investor’s eye. But the present owner wanted a stylish and contemporary makeover for this property, and Patalab Architecture used their imagination and brilliance to make it happen!

Despite the unappealing location of the property in an industrial part of the town, the architects saw its potential and made stunning changes to its original dreary exterior and interior ambiance. Once you begin the tour, you will notice how the clever mix of elements, textures and design ideas have come together to create a simple, modish and peaceful haven, which was once a dilapidated garage.

Before: a run-down facade

Originally, the garage and office looked old and forlorn. The once-clean white paint was peeling off in places, and the ravages of time clearly showed. It completely lacked the warmth and visual interest necessary for an abode. And the team at Patalab Architecture knew that they would have to create magic, despite the sorry state of affairs.

After: gleaming brickwork

Now the old facade has been given a gorgeous and inviting facelift, where the spirit of the garage still remains but subtly. The gleaming bricks are in a shade which is an interesting mix of bronze, copper and tan. Their smooth and shiny surfaces reflect the sun’s rays and glow in the darkness with equal élan. Arty recessed lighting borders the house and enhances its beauty in a unique manner. A large window lets you take a peek at the brightly illuminated interiors, and also lets in natural light during the day.

Before: dull and lacklustre

Before the makeover, the interiors looked almost uninhabitable. The plaster on the walls was peeling off in many places and the clutter was an eyesore. The exposed beams of the ceiling, along with a bunch of unsightly wires looked dirty and repelling. It seemed like a cold, unfriendly place to live in.

After: light, modern interior

The architects did an amazing job with the interiors of The Gables, which you can clearly see in its pristine white walls, faux ceiling with concealed lighting, the comfy seating arrangement, and the swanky layout of the residence. The quirkily shaped grey sofa can conveniently seat many, and overlooks a modern fireplace and entertainment wall. Its sunken positioning also adds depth to the space. The living area receives ample sunshine too, and features a few artworks which lend an intellectual touch. A single rounded planter in vibrant red houses a glorious flowering plant, and breaks the monotony of the abundance of neutral shades. A smart, futuristic structure in rich wood flaunts slat-like appearance, and delicately demarcates the living, dining, kitchen and corridor areas. All in all, the interiors exude openness, and yet privacy remains undisturbed.

After: an airy, contemporary space

Partially concealed by the sleek wooden structure and a tapering pillar, lies the gorgeously illuminated dining area. The large window beyond the kitchen countertop and a massive skylight ensure that sunshine always floods the space. A minimalistic wooden table with a white top sits in the centre, surrounded by chic grey and wooden chairs. A charming white paper lantern has been suspended over the table, and it softly brightens up the space in the evenings. The kitchen is a sleek and uncomplicated affair in dark grey, white and chrome. The countertop has cabinets underneath for all storage needs.

After: dark wood and white

The slatted wooden structure houses a beautifully lit timber staircase which leads to the top storey where the bedrooms are. The rich wooden tone offers an enticing contrast against the virgin whiteness of the kitchen. The brick wall of the kitchen has been whitewashed carefully to combine the cleanliness of white with the understated earthiness of the bricks. The sink countertop flaunts a slightly industrial charm, and is lighted by a couple of contemporary pendant lamps in white. A simple open shelf comes in handy while organizing things which require easy access.

After: raw, chic symmetry

When you view the interiors from this angle, it is not hard to appreciate the sense of symmetry which was at play during the designing of this home. The architects did everything to keep the house well-ventilated and bright for a cheerful, optimistic vibe. The wooden structure housing the staircase acts like a sophisticated partition between the cooking and dining spaces and the living and study zones. Observe the cosy work area which lies beyond the sofa. It features an expansive bookshelf and an adequately lighted workstation. So whether you need to work on something official from home, or feel like relaxing with a book, this space is ideal for both purposes.

After: plenty of glass

The side of the shining brown house is lined with patches of grass and pebbles. And this is where you come upon the large skylight which lets you enjoy a top view of the dining space below. The view is quirky, fun and has a hint of childish delight! The Gables as you can see, is surrounded by rows of industrial looking apartments. But it shines like a beacon in their midst with its quaint but modern touches and thoughtful designs.

Patalab Architecture has turned a soulless garage into a warm, airy and cheerful residence which celebrates the boons of open layouts and minimalistic decor. Nothing unnecessary clutters the interiors, and the house sticks to white and wooden tones primarily for a spacious and contemporary effect. We hope you enjoyed this makeover project as much as we did, and found inspiration for your own home. Here is another ideabook to fuel your creative juices, A Victorian terrace transformation.
