Moving into a new home is exciting, yet incredibly stressful!  In your current, or past home, you knew every curve, every inch – and where every step or light switch was.  You knew it like the back of your hand.

However, a new home bring will bring in fresh ideas, new interiors and most importantly, a new canvas for creativity. We have created a list of seven things you can do to better acquaint yourself with your new home, and even your new neighborhood. Sometimes it's purely up to you to help yourself settle in…

Pick a great design

First, when deciding to move in, choose a home with a great design that will help your family now and in the future. This decision will depend on the type of family and atmosphere you wish to provide – and we suggest you always leave more room than just for yourself!

Develop a relationship with your neighbors

When you purchase or build a home, you're also buying the neighborhood and the neighbors, so of course it makes sense to get to know them! Bake your favourite cake or make super-cute invites for a quiet and intimate dinner at your place and hand deliver them.  Who cares if no one else has done this – you will be the neighbor that sets the new tone in your neighborhood.

Tend to stick with a city-scape view? Perfect. Knock on the doors closest to you for a dinner party everyone will remember!

Invite family and friends over

There's no better way to feel comfortable in a new home than inviting family and friends over for a formal and fun dinner party. Whether you're trying out the new balcony or patio, or fixing your dining room for the perfect atmosphere, breaking in new areas of your home with those that you love will begin to make it feel like home, sooner rather than later.

Avoid making the same mistake twice

If you realise some of the design mistakes you made in your old home, then try not to make those mistakes again.  Perhaps you realised that you didn't like the sofa with that bookshelf after all, or that the olive green colour on the wall was short-lived and trendy.

Make a list of the things you won't miss about your old place and make a point to avoid those mistakes twice with your new home.

Use colours strategically

We know that colours are temporary and can be easily changed – however, don't go too crazy with color the second you move into your new home.

Starting with a clean, fresh and white slate is always best and once you decide where to place your furnishings and accessories, perhaps different colours will pop or other colour schemes will make more sense.  Listen to your home, rather than speaking for it!

Cheap furnishings are not always the best

In student or apartment-style living, we are often searching for the cheapest furniture that provides the most aesthetic appeal. In these situations, that's perfectly fine. In a new home, we suggest that you start to consider quality over quantity. Yes, the upfront costs will be more, but the longevity and style of the furnishings will last you a lot longer.

This time around, why not make up the exterior of your home to match the interior for a full effect!

Periodically change the appearance

It's always refreshing to try something new and sometimes you don't necessarily need new items to complete the task.  Taking the items you already have and simply shifting them around strategically can give you a fresh and new look in your home. Always work with the walls, natural light and windows and change your space from being open-concept to being slightly divided.  These are temporary changes we're talking about here, so anything you don't like can be easily changed.

Settling into a new home can be a rough adjustment, but just keep in mind that at some point, you and your family will begin to familiarise yourself with it once again.
